The food industry can be a pretty dark place. Clever but misleading marketing means people are drawn in and lead to believe that certain foods they are eating are good for them. Labels such as ‘fortified with vitamins’ and ‘healthy for your heart’ don’t mean a great deal.
Let’s take a look at some of the worst food offenders, the ones you probably thought were good for you and event those you may have thought were helping you lose weight and hopefully you can banish them from your kitchen cupboards forever!
Here goes…

1. Cereal
Cereal is usually packed full of sugar and high GI carbs. This means you get an initial spike in energy from consuming them but it will soon wear off leaving you hungry. Cereal is often cleverly advertised with fronts such as ‘contains vitamins and iron’, but remember, a chocolate bar also has plus points but you wouldn’t live on them! Swap cereal for a healthy breakfast containing slowly digesting carbohydrates and protein to keep you fuller and your waistline smaller.

2. Fruit Smoothies
Of course fruit is healthy for you but fruit smoothies are packed full of sugar! Some smoothies are a silent killer for the waistline, some of them contain more carbohydrates and sugar than a can of coke but because they are made with fruit, it’s thought that they are healthy – wrong! Swap your fruit smoothies for a protein shake, these a lower calorie, lower sugar and lower carbs. Fruit juice is so dangerously largely due to the fructose factor. In June 2014, a study published in the journal Nutrition found that the average fruit juice’s fructose concentration is 45.5 grams per liter.

3. Farmed fish like salmon and Tilapia
In fact, eating farmed salmon and tilapia is worse than eating bacon in some ways. Be sure to avoid farmed salmon, too. It’s often called ‘Atlantic’ salmon or just salmon. University of New York at Albany researchers found dioxin levels in farm-raised salmon to be 11 times higher than those in wild salmon. The environmental pollutants are linked to cancer, organ damage and immune system dysfunction.

4. Vegetable oils
Have you been cooking with vegetable oils? These also fall into the “health” foods you should never eat category. Along with margarine, vegetable oils like canola oil are highly inflammatory and not healthy by any stretch of the imagination. They are usually genetically modified, are partially hydrogenated and have been linked to atherosclerosis, birth defects, bone and tendon problems and cancer.

5. Sugar free drinks and artificial sweeteners
Just because the sugar has been removed doesn’t mean it’s good for you! Sugar free drinks and artificial sweeteners can be lethal. They contain an abundance of harmful ingredients, which are no good for your gut. Artificial sweeteners and aspartame have been linked to cancer, the onset of diabetes, seizures, weight gain and many more ailments. Why not have some fruit infused water for some flavour?
Hopefully after reading the above you have realised that not all the diet-friendly and so-called healthy foods are good for you! Always try to opt for the most natural foods possible and organic/free range wherever you can. Your body will love you for it.
